Google Base Module

Google Base is a free service that allows you to host all kinds of searchable products/content on Google. You can upload your own data feeds to make your products searchable, or search through thousands of products available on the web and price compare them with Yahoo Pipes.

Google Base is also similar to Craigslist in which you can search for jobs, housing, items for sale, vehicles, events and more.

You can enter one or more keywords to describe your search. You can also enter a geographic location to limit your search to that area. Enter a geographic location if you’re looking for housing or jobs in a particular area. The possibilities are endless with Google Base. You can search for tickets to concert, find a vehicle, a job, buy a house, get a product review and much more. Do a few searches on Google Base and you’ll see how powerful it is.

To search Google Base using Yahoo Pipes, first select a category. Here’s the list of categories for you to choose from:

  • _Adconnect_data_feed – (http://adconnect.com/feed.html) Sites that collect advertising (for example classified and auction sites) can offer their users the option to have their ad included in the AdConnect network.
  • _Shipping_data – Items that include shipping data and prices.
  • _Tax_data – Items that include tax information (ie taxes charged).
Adwordsconversions – (http://www.alrayeswebsolutions.com/blog/e-commerce/use-googlebase-with-your-adwords-ad) You can link your Google Adwords account with your Google Base account if you are a merchant.

In this example, we’re going to dream a little and look for Ferraris to buy within 20 miles of the zip code 90210 (Beverly Hills, California) mmm…

Cool. Now lets drill down the results and see all the extra info we get for the Ferrari 360 Modena 2002.

The more information the seller inputs, the more information we have to work with. Here we can see the:

  • Make
  • Model
  • Trim
  • Description
  • Transmission condition
  • Customer id
  • Amenities
  • RSS feed for this Google Base item
  • Location of the vehicle including:
  • Latitude
  • Longitude
  • Postal code
  • City
  • State
  • Country
  • Quality (accuracy of the location determined by Yahoo Pipes)
  • URL of the Google Base item
  • Engine size
  • Google Base item id
  • Posting expiry date

Imagine what you can do with all this information at your fingertips! Get your creative juices flowing. You could dedicate an entire website to car ads in California and have it entirely automated thanks to Yahoo Pipes. We can take any of this info, mashup it up and put it on our website for any vehicle or any item listed on Google Base for that matter.

Lets try one more Google Base item in a different category so we can see what information we can grab. I’m feeling kind of hungry –I think I want to make some buffalo hot wings – but I need a recipe. So I’m going to search Google Base recipes for “buffalo hot wings”.

As you’d expect, we’d get way different info for our recipe results than we did for our Ferrari results in the previous example. Lets drill them down and see what we get in the Yahoo Pipes debugger. Our primary data includes the:

  • Google Base item link
  • Customer id
  • Ingredients
  • Google Base id
  • Author
  • Target country
  • Description (the actual recipe)
  • Posting language
  • Publish date
  • Expiry date
  • Category
  • Title

Again, there’s so much you can do with this data. You could make an entire website dedicated to recipes and have it entirely automated and searchable thanks to Yahoo Pipes and Google Base. You could organize each recipe by publish date, ingredients, target country, alphabetically, and more.
I encourage you to play around with the other categories in Google Base and see what the results yield. We only scratched the surface by querying vehicles and recipes, but as you can see, there was a lot of data we got from those.
